Insights for the Job Seeker by Callings.ai

We live in an ever-changing world. I doubt anyone would question that statement. Every day we hear new announcements of workplace transformation, and amidst all the clamor, it can be really hard to locate employment opportunities. A recent Wall Street Journal article highlighted alarming trends. Companies across all capacities are downsizing rapidly – a stark contrast to the recent period when white-collar jobs were plentiful. Managers have been particularly targeted. From 2022 to 2025, management ranks decreased by 6.1%, while executive roles fell by 4.6%, according to Live Data Technologies.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Here’s what’s happening:

-Bank of America had 285,000 employees in 2010; today they have 213,000, despite revenue being 18% higher.

-Walmart is using AI agents, cutting 18 weeks from the apparel production calendar. That translates to 100,000 fewer employees than a decade ago.

-Starbucks has eliminated over 1,000 jobs.

-Grindr and Moderna are rolling out new products with no headcount increases, while pushing existing staff to handle everything.

-Shopify and Duolingo have deployed sophisticated AI models to make decisions and handle requests that humans formerly managed.

-Match Group plans to thin its ranks.

-Startups such as Skims are cutting positions.

AI with your pancakes?

The company behind Applebee’s and IHOP is now using artificial intelligence in its restaurants, and working behind the scenes to streamline operations. Their executives feel this helps boost customer loyalty.

Power is setting the tone more than ever – we all heard about the interview with Jamie Dimon. He and Andy Jassy of Amazon are just two executives who have voiced business concerns, while mentioning aims such as lower headcount, lower costs, higher profits, and return to the office.

But here’s where it gets interesting. IBM has taken a different approach. CEO Arvind Krishna replaced hundreds of HR workers with AI, then hired additional programmers and salespeople for what he calls “critical thinking” domains. These are areas in which people need to “face up against other humans” rather than tackling the rote process-work AI can swiftly dish up.

Generational Reality

We are dealing with the largest multi-generational workforce in history, spanning over 50 years. Each generation brings different expectations to work.

-Zoomers know their value and want it reflected in everything, including their work culture. They care about what a company stands for.

-Millennial’s make work-life balance a priority, sometimes over career path.

-Boomers are a diverse, multi-skilled group that don’t necessarily want to lead but have a desire to contribute. They prefer traditional workplaces that value responsibility and hierarchy, and are proving to be quite agile.

Such discrepancies across generations bring big challenges for managers, since more than four in five employees now expect hybrid work models.

What This Means for People

The human impact is real.

-Nearly two-thirds (64%) of professionals globally are overwhelmed by how quickly work is changing. Almost half (49%) are worried about being left behind.

-The biggest challenges? Proving they can work from home successfully (30%), integrating AI into daily work (27%), and managing multi-generational teams (25%).

-LinkedIn shows a 123% increase in posts about flexible work over the last two years. Meanwhile, LinkedIn Learning courses for AI skills have spiked 117% among non-technical professionals. People are scrambling to keep up.

So, What Do You Do?

Stay on top of change. AI and hybrid work situations are changing constantly. Adapt your thinking to a growth mindset – be open and willing to learn. Practice writing prompts or using AI to take notes. Identify and embrace learning in bite-size pieces so you don’t get overwhelmed. While the challenges are significant, those who adapt, learn, and stay flexible will find opportunities in this new landscape. The key is not just surviving the change, but positioning yourself to thrive within it.
